
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (and Dry)
Let’s be honest: putting electrical heaters in a bathroom is a bit like inviting a disaster if you don’t do it right. You’ve got steam, splashing water, and high humidity all fighting against your wiring. You can’t just toss a standard lamp in the ceiling and cross your fingers. To get that total electrical insulation, you have to obsess over the barrier between the live power and the damp air.
Dealing with the Damp
Water loves to conduct electricity. In a steamy bathroom, condensation doesn’t just happen—it clings to the lamp housing and settles right on the terminals. To stop this, we use high-grade ceramic insulators and silicone gaskets. Think of them as a waterproof raincoat for your connections. They keep the moisture from sneaking into the wiring. If those seals fail, you get “tracking,” which is basically electricity leaking across the surface. That’s how you end up with a blown fuse or, worse, a short circuit. We make sure the housing hits an IP44 rating or better, just to keep the steam out of the guts of the machine.
The Safety Net
Safety in a wet zone is all about where the electricity goes when things go wrong. We build in a dedicated earth wire that bonds the metal chassis straight to the building’s ground. It’s a simple fail-safe. If a wire frays or a seal finally gives up, the current trips the GFCI immediately. It kills the power before the ceiling fixture ever becomes “live.” Just make sure you’re wired into an RCD-protected circuit. Without that, the risk of a shock while you’re in the shower is just way too high.
The Heat Struggle
Here’s the tricky part: high-wattage infrared lamps get incredibly hot. That heat creates a temperature gap that actually pulls moisture toward the cooler parts of the fixture. While the heat helps dry off the lamp itself, it can be brutal on cheap plastic. Over time, low-quality seals just brittle and crack. That’s why we stick with heat-stabilized polymers. They don’t warp. If the housing warps, the insulation gap shrinks, and your safety margin basically vanishes. Do yourself a favor and check your seals every 12 months. If they feel brittle or look cracked, swap them out. It’s a five-minute job that saves a lot of headaches.
