
Don’t Let Your Shower Heater Blow Up
Putting an infrared heater in a shower or anywhere with heavy steam is a bit of a gamble. You’ve got water vapor and high-voltage electricity living in the same small space. If you use a standard quartz lamp, you’re asking for trouble. That’s why we stick with IP44-rated enclosures and explosion-proof quartz. It’s basically an insurance policy against the lamp shattering the moment a cold drop of water hits a hot surface.
The deal with “Explosion-Proof” quartz
Here’s the thing: thermal shock is the real killer. Imagine a filament sitting at 600°C. A single stray droplet of water hits it, and crack—the glass splits instantly. We use explosion-proof quartz because it can handle those wild temperature swings without giving up. And if the tube does happen to fail? The design keeps the glass from spraying shards all over the room. It keeps the mess contained.
Keeping the moisture out (IP44)
You’ll see the “IP44” label on these. In plain English, it means the unit is sealed tight enough to keep out anything larger than 1mm and can handle water splashing at it from any angle. We spend a lot of time sealing the wiring junctions and the housing. Why? Because steam loves to find its way into electrical terminals. If it gets in, you get short circuits and nasty corrosion on your contact points. Not a great look.
The trade-off
Nothing is perfect. To get that IP44 protection, we have to put the lamp in a housing. This blocks a tiny bit of the heat radiation compared to a tube sitting out in the open air. It’s not a dealbreaker, but you should keep it in mind. When you’re figuring out how much wattage you need to get the room warm, just bump your calculations up a hair to make up for that lost flux. One last tip:Wire these into a dedicated GFCI circuit. Even with the best seals, infrared elements pull a lot of current. They need a clean, steady power supply. If your voltage starts jumping around, you’ll burn through your filaments way faster than you should. Keep your specs tight and you’ll be golden.
